Some tips on using the site (and the walks)
This site is not a company, charity or institution. So is it therefore a blog? No! – not another journal of ‘reflective content’. (Nevertheless, blog-type reader comments are welcome: they provide formative feedback.) Put simply, this site is just for routing out walks (in and around Wiltshire) and for suggesting how each one can be interesting. Albeit for walkers with only modest ambitions.
Routes are between 2 and 5 miles. There is no registration and no advertising. The simple design of the pages allows a walk to be followed easily on a smartphone (or they can be printed). Although, if you can, following them through the GPS routes provided makes everything very easy (help here)
A walk is identified by the town or village defining the start and end of a ‘circle’. Descriptions do invite engagement with that place – as well as the walking. Each ‘circle’ is described by a route map, documented with photos (click to enlarge) and supported by some textual scribbling (no expert authority implied). This site may help choices: or it can be a guide when a choice is made. While all walks have been tried – and believed by me to be sound – you should consult each description carefully. Particularly noting where traffic is possible on recommended lanes – their verges can sometimes be narrow. In the end of course, you must take them at your own risk.
The distribution of walks is shown geographically on the overview page, links to detailed walk descriptions are listed on the home page.
Maps distinguish footpaths, lanes/roads, suggested directions, and contour lines (warning you of slopes). Only mapped footpaths are chosen. The countryside code is important (summary here) – including always taking care on roads and lanes with no paving. Also see: Wiltshire Rights of Way; Wiltshire Footpath Map.
These pages are tailored to smartphone use. If you carry one, the footpath app will also make following routes a breeze – and allow exploration of short (or long) cuts.
This is a personal – not commercial – site. Old fashioned internet: no ads, no popups, no ‘sign up here’ demands. Content was posted originally as merely a personal memory record. But if it can be of practical value to others – that is a bonus. This site gathers no identity information about visitors unless they declare their email on the contact page. A privacy policy is here.
